Commemorative pipe 'Columna Pacis

ca. 1817 - ca. 1820

This strange-looking object is a tobacco pipe, which can actually be used. It was made to commemorate the Battle of Waterloo (1815). The peace column depicted is a simplified reproduction of the monument which was erected in 1817 in honour of Lieutenant-Colonel Sir Alexander Gordon who died on the battlefield at the age of twenty-nine. It is not yet clear who commissioned this pipe.
