Bracelet with swan motif

1850 - 1870

A triple gold ring ends in an open rococo cartouche with winged angel's heads. Onto that, several brilliants have been placed and three rows of sapphires are mounted in elevated settings. On the shoulders there are two floral sprigs with a swan on it. The swan is inclining its head and has a ruby for an eye. The swan is the incarnation of grace, aristocracy and courage, but also of equanimity in the face of death, hence the expression "swan-song" for a person's last act in life. The swan also stands for the power of poetry. In this particular case the bird refers to the romantic king Ludwig II of Bavaria (1845-1886) who chose the swan as a Leitmotif and gave this jewel to court actress Hermine Bland-Steiner.
