Commemorative medal Benedictus Arias Montanus
1569
Obverse: Bust in profile of Benedictus Arias Montanus (1527-1598) circumscribed with the words 'BENED. ARIAS. MONTANVS. AET. 43'; at the cut of the arm 1569. He is wearing the medal of the Order of St James. Reverse: in laurel wreath the naked Archimedes with raised hand holding a book and the word 'EYPHKA' (eureka). This representation is the device of the Spaniard Benedictus Arias, the theologian responsible for the publication of the eight-part Biblia Polyglotta printed at the Plantin printing-house between 1568 and 1573. The same Archimedes is depicted bottom left on the title page of the Bible and, bottom right, the golden compass of the publisher Plantin.
