Sunburst monstrance

1715 - 1716, 1715/02 - 1716/11

In the Catholic Church the consecrated Host was the personification of the body of Christ. To treat the Host with the necessary respect, it was placed in a sunburst monstrance and exhibited to believers during celebrations of mass and processions to bless them. A monstrance is a gold or silver-gilt container which was often ornately embellished with Bible scenes to underline the importance of the Host.
