Chatelaine

1800 - 1900, 1872 - 1904

How do you carry a large number of small items with you without overloading your pockets? A chatelaine is a decorative belt hook worn at the waist with a series of chains suspended from it. In the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries all kinds of useful objects were attached to the chains so as to have them close to hand. They were worn by both men and women, though the objects differed. The female version contained items used for the housekeeping or toilet, while a man’s chatelaine was often hung with seals.
