Ready to be inspired by the art of silversmithing and the stories behind true craftsmanship? Head over to the DIVA museum for an exciting talk with silversmith Max Gielis, restorer Annick Mertens, and goldsmith Michel Mekke

These top artisans received a grant from the Flemish Government for a master-apprentice project highlighting the art of classic silverwork. Now halfway through this two-year journey, they’re here to share their experiences and insights.

In collaboration with the DIVA museum, they draw inspiration from the impressive collection of Southern Dutch and Belgian silverwork. They selected two pieces from the collection, studied them in detail, and started a creative process in the DIVA atelier to produce new silverwork that matches or even surpasses the quality of the originals.

Max Gielis, with over twenty-five years of experience, has worked as an independent silversmith for master silversmith Koen Wygaerden after his training at Sint-Lucas Antwerp. There, he met Michel Mekke, a renowned master goldsmith. Annick Mertens joined them during a Hammertime workshop at DIVA, seeking to expand her metal restoration skills into silversmithing. Their work, ranging from contemporary creations to restorations of antique silver, is showcased in museums and galleries across Europe.
