The DIVA atelier is a place to roll up your sleeves and get hands-on. Here, you’ll discover how a piece of jewellery comes to life and try your hand at one of the oldest techniques: sand casting.
During the workshop, you’ll get a step-by-step introduction to the Delft sand casting method. Working in pairs, you’ll fill a fine sand mould and design a ring shape. Afterwards, you or the instructor pours molten metal into the mould. Once cooled, you’ll have a unique, self-made cast piece in your hands.
Please note: this is a first cast and not a finished piece of jewellery, so the ring is not wearable yet. It would need further finishing (removing the sprue, filing, polishing). There is no time for that in this workshop. Instead, your cast ring will be added to the museum collection as a record of your work. If you’d like to create a fully finished, wearable ring, you can join our full-day Forge a Silver Ring workshop.
In addition to the practical work, you’ll also learn about the science behind silversmithing: what an alloy is, the properties of different metals, and the temperatures required for melting.
This workshop gives you a unique insight into the world of silversmithing with your own ring design preserved in the museum collection as a tangible reminder.
