Conway, Edward

Edward Conway was an associate of King Leopold I. He obtained his doctorate in law from the University of Ghent in 1827. In 1828 he started his career in politics and was appointed a civil servant in the Ministry of the Interior. After the uprising of 1830, he joined the new rulers and in 1831, was promoted to bureau chief at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. A year later, he was presented to the king by Jules van Praet as candidate secretary of the Civil List, he was accepted for the job and worked directly under the king. Conway was also the secretary to Queen Louise Marie. In addition to his duties as secretary, he was also involved in the education of the children and staff, and he managed the private estate of the monarch. In 1855 his services were recognized and he was awarded the title of Viscount. Conway passed away in Ixelles in 1871.
