Verberckt, Jan Baptist I

1735 - 1819

Antwerp silversmith. Born in 1735 as the son of silversmith Michiel Verberckt and Joanna Maria Buyssens, daughter of silversmith Jan Baptist Buyssens. From 1751 till 1754 he attenuated the academy. In 1756 he was in Paris with his uncle, the sculptor Jacques Verberckt. In 1761, 1766 and 1767 he won a prize at the Antwerp academy. Worked for his father, but he signed the works. Married in 1767 to Sara Maria Gillekens (Gielkens). Became a master in 1771. Took over his father's workshop in 1775. Verberckt was also a professor at the academy. He became dean in 1794 and a member of the academy board in 1803. His son Jan Baptist II (1774-1838) took over the workshop in 1811. Died in 1819.
