Pendant 'Luisterlijk cirkelbed' and box
1976 - 1977
The impressive jewel is made of ivory rings with a gold head or mask in which we recognize Landuyts' style. The pendant is set with cabochons of amethyst, garnet and carnelian. The red and orange color of these last two stones refer to blood and fire and are typical of his color palette. As with several of his other works of art, the eyes, which focus on the viewer, play an important role and the mouth is open and somewhat dumbfounded. As far as materials are concerned, as well as technique and themes (mask, cross shape), this is a representative work by Octave Landuyt that is very typical of the 1960s-1970s. What is special about this jewel is that it is a unique item with a matching signed bronze box on which he painted a face with a bird in green and blue bronze paint. In the mid-1970s, Landuyt created a number of similar, signed jewelry boxes, the interior of which was always adapted to the size of the jewelry sold. He conceived the pieces as a total work of art.
