Jonghelinck, Jacques

Jacques Jonghelinck was an Antwerp medaillist and sculptor. His father was the medallist Pierre Jonghelinck and his brother Nicolaas Jonghelinck (1517 - 1570) was a merchant banker and art collector. He became an apprentice with Floris Cornelis (1513 - 1575), whereafter he went to Milan to work in the studio of Leone Leoni (1509 - 1590). In 1555 he comes back to the Netherlands and stays in Antwerp and Brussels. His oeuvre exists of bronze statues and coins. He made public monuments for Bruges, Brussels and Antwerp, among which the fountain in the parc of Brussels and the Statue of the Duke of Alba, that has been melted. Jacques received reputation during his life but after hi death, he fell into oblibion.
