Engraving of the statue of the Duke of Alva in the citadel of Antwerp
Engraving of the statue of the Duke of Alva, Fernando Álvarez de Toledo y Pimentel (1507-1582), erected in 1571. The statue, which stood in the courtyard of the citadel of Antwerp, was designed by Jacob Jonghelinck (1530-1606). The various engravings that circulate, probably copied after Philips Galle (1537-1612), are the last testimony of the statue: it was removed and destroyed by his successor as early as 1577!
