Mineral water bottle

1700 - 1740

The flat bottles were wrapped in plaited straw and transported in large baskets for export via Rotterdam to (among other places) chemist shops in Great Britain. Mineral water bottles were produced by the glassworks Nizet in Liège, the Verrerie d'Amblève near Aywaille, the Verreries de Chênée, the glassworks of the Grandchamps and Cambresier. Also known as eau médicinale, Spa water from the Pouhon spring was famous for its beneficial properties even in the seventeenth century and was exported all over Europe. The bottles were sealed with wax seals to prevent fraud.
