Constantia wine bottle

1860

On the glass seal in a pearled edge 'GROOT / CONSTANTIA'. This bottle has a deep cone-shaped kick. The rather sweet Constantia wine came from the Constantia vineyards in South Africa (south of Cape Town), planted in c.1685 by the governor of the Cape Simon van der Stel (+1712), who named the vineyard after his wife Constantia. The name 'Great Constantia' refers to the vineyard of the same name. These wines were expensive and so bottles with a limited capacity were used: a pint or half a standard bottle. See W. Van den Bossche, Antique Glass Bottles, Woodbridge 2001, ill. 80.
