Two ointment vessels or Albarelli

1500 - 1600

The albarello imported from the Middle East via Italy served as a container for medicines or ointments. The slightly waisted shape of the body made it easier to pick up when they were placed side by side. The large versions were used by the pharmacist himself, while these small ointment pots were probably given to customers to take home. They have been found in large numbers during archaeological excavations. (Source: The Sterckshof Collection, 2003)
