Horse hoof bottle

1750 - 1770

These horseshoe-shaped bottles with deeply indented kick were exported from glassworks in Charleroi and Bruges mainly to the Netherlands. They were used, for instance, as carafes in public places such as inns and in pharmacies as well as in the household. The small bottles of this type, which are c. 15 cm high, were called calcoentjes or 'turkeys'. See W. Van den Bossche, Antique Glass Bottles, Woodbridge 2001, ill. 92.
