1832-05-30

Inscription on the socle right 'Alf. Baro De Browne, aet. 16 ann 30 May 1832' (Alf. Baron De Browne, aged16 on May 30th 1832) The De Browne family came from Ireland and settled in Belgium in the early nineteenth century. Their motto was 'Suivez raison'. Baron Alfred De Browne de Tiège was born in Paris in 1816. Around 1824-1828 he came to Antwerp with his mother. In the year the two busts were made, Alfred and his brother Trophime were already orphans. Alfred married Anne Le Paige (1817-1899) on August 7th 1838. In 1841 he purchased Castle Muggenberg in Deurne and a year later had architect J. Van Cuyck carry out major renovation work. In the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries this castle was owned by the Lunden family. Alfred De Browne lived there until his death in 1903. The De Browne's had a family crypt in St Fredegandus Church in Deurne.
