MASTERCLASS

Silvia Weidenbach

"Treasure Boxes"

DIVA has invited jewellery designer Silvia Weidenbach to lead a five-day, creative, online masterclass with the focus on tactility and the other senses.

Silvia Weidenbach combines digital designs, 3D prints and traditional techniques to create opulent, eye-catching jewels. She was the V&A’s first Gilbert Collection artist-in-residence. During this masterclass she will take participants on a creative journey through the Masterpieces in Miniature exhibition. The masterclass will run from July 5th to July 9th 2021.

What form will the masterclass take?

Just before the start of the masterclass, you will be sent a box of little objects by post. Short assignments will have you working with the contents of the box and exploring new and unusual materials, styles, and ways of thinking about and looking at jewellery design.

There will be lots of scope for interaction during the online masterclass. This will take the form of break-out rooms, click-in click-out options, pop-up sessions and a daily visit from one or more external guests who will talk about their work or favourite object in the Gilbert collection or DIVA’s collection. You can expect to receive plenty of input and feedback, just as you would in a physical workshop.

DIVA sees the exchange of knowledge about craftsmanship, technology and design as a key part of the masterclass. It covers at some length the way Silvia Weidenbach combines traditional and digital techniques in her work and how she reinterprets and uses historical pieces as inspiration for new work.

After the masterclass you will send the box back to DIVA and your creation will be presented in the museum and on DIVA´s online channels. This exhibition will run from July 26th to August 15th 2021.

Prepare for an inspirational baroque ride and a hands-on approach!

About Silvia Weidenbach

Silvia Weidenbach is an award-winning jeweller, who fuses the traditional with the contemporary. She uses both historical techniques and new technologies, melting them to create striking, unique pieces. She explores the complexity of form and colour to develop an entirely new aesthetic for jewellery in the 21st century.

Silvia Weidenbach innovates and revels in new possibilities of making which she calls “digital craft”. These new tools and methods of thinking and making have led to interesting collaborations such as working with architects, filmmakers, perfumers, dancers, Vogue, Design Museum London, The Sir John Soane Museum London, V&A London, BMW Munich and Microsoft Research Cambridge. She is currently a lecturer at the Glasgow School of Art.
