Plaquettes 'Diana huntress' and 'The Judgement of Paris'

1650 - 1700

The two plaques may have decorated an Antwerp cabinet. a: A deer, which has been struck by one of Diana's arrows, is chased into the water by hunting dogs. The horn blower was copied from a figure in P.P. Rubens's painting "Diana hunting with her nymphs" (1639). b: Paris, who is sitting on a rock, gives the apple to Venus. Next to her is Amor and behind her the helmeted Minerva and Juno with the peacock. Mercury is walking away in the background. A very similar silver plaque featuring the same scene decorates the left-hand door of the Mentmore Cabinet in the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.
